“Innovation isn’t just about creating technology; it’s about creating possibilities.” – Indrajit Sabharwal
At a time when India was primarily a consumer in the global tech landscape, Indrajit Sabharwal saw an untapped opportunity—the potential for India to become a creator. . With no capital, unwavering ambition, and a vision to put India on the global technology map, he founded Simmtronics. What started as a small venture would go on to challenge industry giants like Apple and Samsung, pioneering advancements in semiconductors, smartphones, tablets, memory devices, AI solutions, and IT infrastructure.
This is the story of a visionary builder who transformed a startup into a global tech powerhouse, redefining India’s role in the technology ecosystem.

The Foundation: A Vision Takes Root
Born with a deep curiosity for technology, Indrajit Sabharwal earned his engineering degree from Pune University. Unlike many who focused solely on technical expertise, he recognized that the intersection of business and technology would be the true game-changer. This led him to pursue three postgraduate management degrees while working, preparing him for his dual role as a technologist and strategist.
In 1988, equipped with technical expertise and business acumen, he took a bold step, leaving his job at ICL UK (now Fujitsu ICIM) to start his own company. With no capital, he founded SI Consultants, an IT solutions company, in early 1989.
Unlike most firms at the time, which focused on services, Sabharwal envisioned a future in manufacturing technology—a radical idea in India then. Within a year, SI Consultants secured high-profile clients such as Modi Lufthansa, Xerox, HP Digital, and Sahara Airlines, generating INR 30 lakh in revenue. Yet, for Sabharwal, success was never about stability—it was about pushing boundaries.
The Turning Point: From Consultancy to Global Tech Giant
A serendipitous trip to California changed everything. There, he met the owners of one of the world’s largest independent manufacturers of memory products. A casual conversation soon evolved into a strategic partnership, making Sabharwal their official partner in India.
However, he wasn’t content with just distribution. Over the next two years, he frequently traveled to the U.S., immersing himself in semiconductor devices manufacturing technology. By 1990, he had not only mastered the technical aspects but also developed a vision to create his own brand. And thus, Simmtronics was born.
Building Simmtronics: India’s First Mover in Semiconductors
Starting with semiconductor memory modules and semiconductor DRAM technology, Simmtronics became a supplier to major global brands like HCL, LG, IBM, Compaq, and Dell. However, India lacked a semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.
Instead of backing down, Sabharwal took a bold step—he set up semiconductor assembly in India, becoming the first mover in the country’s semiconductor industry. Despite intense competition from the grey market, Simmtronics leveraged its early-mover advantage to dominate the sector.
By 2000, Sabharwal had established Simmtronics’ first manufacturing plant in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan, followed by a second plant in Roorkee in 2005. The company expanded its product line to include motherboards, graphics cards (for NVIDIA), color monitors, and semiconductor DRAM modules, forming key partnerships with Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, Samsung, VIA, and SK Hynix.
Simmtronics also expanded globally, opening manufacturing facilities in Singapore (2005) and Dubai (2006), solidifying its position as a global tech leader.
Breaking Records: India’s First Affordable Laptop & Market-Leading Tablets
In 2010, Simmtronics co-branded laptops with IBM and Ubuntu, selling them globally for just $190—creating the world’s most affordable laptop at the time.
However, the biggest milestone came in 2012, when Simmtronics entered the tablet market. Competing with Apple and Samsung seemed impossible, but Sabharwal’s XPAD Mini tablets proved otherwise.
- XPAD Mini became the No.1 selling tablet in Dubai, surpassing Apple.
- Simmtronics ranked No.3 globally in the tablet PC market (2012–2014).
Reflecting on his journey, Sabharwal once said:
“The key to innovation isn’t just thinking outside the box—it’s realizing that the box never existed in the first place.”
Redefining India’s Tech Ecosystem
Under Sabharwal’s leadership, Simmtronics has gained global recognition, establishing itself as one of the top semiconductor and technology manufacturing companies.
Long before the ‘Make in India’ initiative gained traction, Sabharwal was already manufacturing semiconductor chips domestically, proving that India could be more than just a consumer of technology—it could be a creator.
With expertise spanning semiconductors, smartphones, tablets, laptops, graphics cards, and AI-driven infrastructure, he expanded Simmtronics into AI-driven data centers, advanced computing solutions, and next-generation semiconductor technologies.
