Helen Mushi: Championing Disability Rights and Inclusive Development in Tanzania

Imagine a world where every person, regardless of their abilities, has access to the same opportunities for education, health, and livelihood. Helen Mushi, the Founder and CEO of the Tambua Utu Foundation, is on a mission to make this vision a reality. From her early education to her leadership in advocating for the disabled community, Helen’s journey is one of dedication, resilience, and impact.

Early Life and Educational Foundations

Helen’s academic journey began at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), where she earned a Master of Arts in Cooperative and Community Development. As she pursued her education, this desire to make a difference only grew stronger. Helen attended the University of Dodoma, where she earned her Bachelor of Public Administration (BPA). This academic foundation gave her a deep understanding of the public sector and the policies that govern the rights of Tanzanians, especially marginalized communities.

Her thirst for knowledge didn’t stop there. Helen continued her education at Chuo Kikuu Cha Sokoine Cha Kilimo, obtaining a Master of Arts in Cooperative and Community Development (MA-CCD). This advanced degree further fueled her commitment to driving social change, equipping her with the skills needed to develop and implement initiatives that address the unique challenges faced by underserved communities, particularly people with disabilities.

Reflecting on her educational journey, Helen often emphasizes the importance of education in shaping her advocacy efforts: “Education opens doors not just for personal growth, but for societal change. I believe in using what I’ve learned to uplift others and create inclusive opportunities for all.”

Early Career: Building a Foundation in Community Development

Helen’s career took off as she worked for prominent organizations dedicated to community empowerment. One of her earliest roles was as a Project Management Officer at CARE, where she gained hands-on experience coordinating projects aimed at improving the lives of vulnerable populations. This experience gave her valuable insight into how large-scale programs could be tailored to meet the needs of specific communities, laying the groundwork for her future endeavors.

She then took on a role at TUSONGE CDO as a Senior Project Coordinator, further solidifying her leadership skills in managing projects with far-reaching social impact. These roles allowed her to develop the expertise needed to launch her own foundation, driving her vision of inclusive development for people with disabilities.

Founding Tambua Utu Foundation: A Lifelong Dream Realized

In July 2020, Helen took a bold step and founded the Tambua Utu Foundation. Based in Tanzania, the foundation advocates for the rights of people with disabilities and provides them with the resources and tools needed to live empowered, independent lives. Under Helen’s leadership, the foundation has provided assistive devices, such as wheelchairs, standers, walkers, white canes, and visual aids like magnifiers to hundreds of individuals across the region.

One of her proudest achievements is the foundation’s work in inclusive education. Since its launch, the Tambua Utu Foundation has helped over 300 primary school students and 200 secondary school students with disabilities gain access to education. The foundation provides everything from school supplies to assistive tools and tuition support. Helen is particularly passionate about education, believing that it is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and exclusion for people with disabilities.

Beyond education, Helen’s foundation also focuses on promoting health and wellness. In collaboration with regional hospitals, the Tambua Utu Foundation provides physiotherapy and rehabilitation services to children with physical impairments, ensuring that their health needs are met in a holistic way.

Empowering Women with Disabilities

Another notable initiative under Helen’s leadership is the empowerment of deaf young mothers. Through the foundation’s vocational training programs, 25 deaf mothers have been trained in tailoring skills and equipped with financial literacy knowledge, empowering them to create sustainable livelihoods for themselves and their families.

Helen’s commitment to empowering women in the disabled community is a key part of her advocacy. She believes that when women are given the tools and opportunities to succeed, they not only uplift themselves but also strengthen their communities.

Global Influence and Advisory Roles

Helen’s work has not gone unnoticed on the global stage. In March 2024, she was appointed as a Global Advisor for Billion Strong, an organization dedicated to advancing disability rights and empowering people with disabilities worldwide. In this role, Helen continues to advocate for disability inclusion, using her platform to influence global policies and practices that create a more inclusive world.

A Vision for a Barrier-Free Future

In addition to her role at the foundation, Helen serves as a Global Advisor for Billion Strong and is the Spokesperson of the Kilimanjaro Disability Alliance. These positions enable her to advocate for disability rights on larger platforms, influencing policy and raising awareness about the needs of people with disabilities.

For Helen, every milestone achieved by the foundation is a step closer to creating a more inclusive Tanzania. She is quick to remind those around her that the work is far from over.
