Laying the Foundation: Education and Early Career

Jack’s passion for design began at an early age, fueled by a desire to create visual experiences that speak to people. This passion led him to pursue formal education at Gloucester College, where he earned a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Graphic Design. His time in school laid the groundwork for his later career, instilling both the technical and creative skills needed to thrive in the world of design.

While in school, Jack took on his first professional roles as a Signwriter and Sales Assistant, where he honed his practical skills and developed a deep understanding of how to communicate visually with audiences. His ability to connect with customers and apply design principles in real-world scenarios quickly became evident.

Finding His Niche: Early Professional Roles

Jack’s career took a significant leap forward when he joined River Agency as a Web Designer. In this role, Jack managed and designed incentive websites for prestigious clients like Jaguar Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, and BP. These early experiences gave him the opportunity to refine his skills in UX and UI design, working on multi-lingual, responsive websites that had to perform seamlessly across all devices and browsers.

It was at River Agency where Jack developed his knack for blending visual design with user experience a combination that would later become his signature style. His role involved not just designing visually appealing websites, but ensuring that they delivered on the client’s business goals, such as improving user retention and increasing conversion rates.

Breaking Ground in UX: Key Roles at Tagstr and Sonovate

Jack’s next pivotal role was at Tagstr, where he took on the position of UI Designer. At Tagstr, a global social and content-sharing platform, Jack led the design of a user interface that significantly improved user flow and retention. He conducted user testing and usability research on a daily basis, proving his ability to iterate and improve based on feedback. His agile approach helped Tagstr stand out in a competitive landscape, merging elements of popular platforms like Snapchat and Vimeo into one easy-to-use app.

From Tagstr, Jack moved to Sonovate, where he worked as a UX Designer and led the development of a brand-new timesheet system for the recruitment industry. The system he designed was adopted across the business and continues to serve thousands of clients today. His work at Sonovate showcased his ability to build intuitive, scalable user experiences that meet both the needs of the business and the end user.

“Great UX design solves complex problems in simple ways,” Jack reflects, capturing the philosophy that guided his work at Sonovate.

Stepping Into Leadership: The UX Designer and Motokiki

In 2017, Jack took a bold step forward in his career by founding his own consultancy, The UX Designer. As the founder and lead consultant, Jack has spent the last seven years working with top-tier clients such as MoneySuperMarket, Jaguar Land Rover, Citroen, and Vodafone. His company focuses on crafting high-performing websites and mobile apps that drive conversions, increase customer loyalty, and improve overall user experience.

Jack’s work with Motokiki, a UK-based tyre comparison site, stands out as one of his most challenging and rewarding projects. Serving as the Senior Designer, Jack was responsible for everything from UX/UI design to brand development and corporate identity. He built the company’s entire design system from scratch, including the website, user flow, and internal and external signage.

“Design is not just about aesthetics—it’s about creating experiences that guide users toward action,” Jack says, reflecting on his holistic approach to the project.

Consulting at Scale: Inspiretec and Beyond

In parallel to running his own company, Jack has also worked as a UX Consultant for several major projects. At Inspiretec, Jack assisted on a top blue-chip client project, designing the user experience for a national booking system that is now used across 2,700 locations in the UK and Europe. His ability to lead stakeholder workshops and turn research insights into actionable design changes was a key factor in the project’s success.

Jack’s consulting work is characterized by his dedication to improving customer journeys through deep research and usability testing.

“You can’t build a great product without understanding your users,” Jack explains.
