Meet Dr. Reem Ameri from Leeds, England
With over two decades of experience in education and psychology, Dr. Ameri is the Founder and Director of Loom Psychology Ltd. She is dedicated to making high-quality psychological support accessible to children and families, while helping local authorities meet their statutory deadlines with compassionate and expert care.
The Early Years: A Passion for Education and Psychology
From a young age, Dr. Reem Ameri was drawn to understanding the human mind, particularly how early childhood experiences shape development. This passion led her to pursue a degree in Psychology at the University of Leicester, where she earned her BSc in 2004. Her time at university not only strengthened her academic foundation but ignited a lifelong mission to support children and families in navigating the complexities of education and mental health.
It was during this formative period that Dr. Ameri realized the profound impact psychological support could have when provided early. Her pursuit of knowledge continued with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), focusing on primary teaching. This qualification gave her the unique perspective of understanding the needs of children from both an educational and psychological standpoint.
From Teacher to Educational Psychologist
After completing her PGCE, Dr. Ameri stepped into the world of teaching, with her first role at Humberstone Junior School in Leicester. Here, she worked as a Primary School Teacher, gaining invaluable hands-on experience with children in the classroom. Her desire to make a broader impact led her to Dubai, where she took on the role of Primary School Teacher and Head of Foundation Stage 1 at Dubai British School. The diversity of cultures and educational needs she encountered broadened her understanding of the global challenges in education.
However, Dr. Ameri’s passion for psychology never wavered. In 2009, she returned to the UK to pursue a Masters in Foundations of Clinical Psychology and then
train as an Educational Psychologist at Cardiff University, where she earned her Doctorate in Educational Psychology. This critical step solidified her expertise in psychological assessments, early childhood development, and Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC).
Reflecting on her journey, Dr. Ameri once shared, “I believe children and families should have easy access to quality psychological advice. I believe children should have the right support as early as possible. I love to contribute to something that is meaningful.” This belief became the foundation of her work, guiding her every step as she moved forward in her career.
Building Expertise: Loom Psychology and Beyond
With over two decades of experience, Dr. Ameri has dedicated her career to ensuring children and families receive timely and effective psychological support. In 2012, she joined Leeds City Council as an Educational Psychologist, working closely with families and schools to provide assessments and support services. During this time, she was an integral member of the multi-disciplinary Early Years Autism assessment team, marking the beginning of her specialization in early intervention. Her work in this role contributed to her promotion to Senior Practitioner Educational Psychologist in 2021, specialising in Early Years intervention.
Driven by her vision for a more accessible, compassionate approach to psychological care, Dr. Ameri founded Loom Psychology Ltd in 2021. Loom Psychology has since become a trusted provider of high-quality early years assessments, helping local authorities meet their statutory deadlines.
“We’ve changed from Reach Psychology Services to Loom Psychology. Why Loom? Because we’re modern-day loomers. Weaving with words expert psychological advice,” she explained in a LinkedIn post, emphasizing her commitment to weaving together the threads of expertise, compassion, and support.
A Personalized Approach to Early Years Support
At the heart of Dr. Ameri’s work is her dedication to ensuring that children and families are not just seen but truly heard. She believes that active listening is essential in providing the right support. “So, if our service users (aka customers) ask for salad, we give them salad (metaphorically speaking).” This lighthearted metaphor underscores her belief that the right solution must always match the needs of the individual.
Dr. Ameri’s unique blend of psychological expertise and compassion sets her apart in the field. She has a broad and impactful range of expertise including Selective Mutism, Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC), and issues related to loss and bereavement. She has worked extensively with multi-disciplinary teams, helping to shape the future of early intervention for children with autism and other developmental needs. Her ability to navigate complex systems and deliver timely, thorough assessments has earned her the trust of local authorities and educational professionals alike.
“A psychological assessment is the story we tell about a child. A story of their hopes, strengths and needs. We work with parents and staff to weave that story. And when the right people are in the room, transformational conversations happen.” She shared
Beyond the Office: A Lifelong Learner and Global Explorer
Outside of her professional life, Dr. Ameri’s curiosity and love for learning continue to guide her. As a mother of four children (plus one energetic fur baby), she is always on the go, balancing family life with her passion for psychology. “How do you do it all?” is a question she often hears. Her response? “The truth is… I don’t. Because it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. So, I just try and get a bit better every day.” Her humility and resilience are evident in everything she does, both personally and professionally.
Dr. Ameri’s adventures have taken her across the globe, living and working in places like England, Wales, Iraq, and Dubai. These experiences have shaped her perspective, allowing her to bring a global understanding to her work with diverse communities. She continues to push the boundaries of her expertise, constantly seeking new ways to serve the families and local authorities she works with.
