John’s journey into the business world began in Australia, where he laid a strong academic foundation at La Trobe University, studying economics, politics, mathematics, and English. John’s professional journey commenced in 1976 with MLC Life Ltd, one of Australia’s largest life insurance companies. He began as a commission-only sales agent, a role that would set the stage for his future success. John’s natural talent for sales and leadership quickly became apparent, and by 1979, he had been promoted to Superintendent of a regional team. At just 23 years old, John was the youngest person in the company’s 100-year history to hold such a position.

In 1985, John’s career took another significant leap when he was appointed as the State Sales Manager for the New South Wales southern region. Leading a team of 700 to 850 representatives, John was responsible for driving the region’s sales growth, a challenge he met with characteristic determination and strategic insight. His leadership during this period solidified his reputation as a rising star in the business world.

The Entrepreneurial Leap: Founding Trade Limited

Despite his success in the corporate world, John’s entrepreneurial spirit drove him to explore new opportunities. In 1988, he made the bold decision to co-found Trade Limited, a venture that would redefine trade and business sectors. Alongside two other directors, John built Trade Limited into one of the largest independently owned trade exchanges globally, recognized by the International Reciprocal Trade Association (IRTA).

John’s leadership at Trade Limited was marked by his commitment to ethical business practices and education. He served as the worldwide governor of the IRTA ethics committee and was a member of the certified broker panel, which regulated global industry educational standards. His efforts helped elevate Trade Limited’s standing in the industry, making it a trusted partner for businesses around the world.

During this period, John also co-owned and directed several other successful ventures, including Westrent Mazda Car Rentals and Trade Print, a lithographic print company. Westrent Mazda, located on Australia’s Gold Coast, catered to the booming tourist market. Under John’s leadership, the company flourished, further demonstrating his versatility and business acumen.

Expanding Horizons: A Global Impact

In the early 2000s, John expanded his influence by moving to the United Kingdom, where he continued to apply his business acumen on a global scale. One of his notable roles during this period was as a consultant for Bartercard, a company specializing in trade exchanges. Known for his ability to “fix stuff that no one else can,” John became an invaluable asset, applying his expertise in sales systems, management, franchising, licensing, training, and marketing.

John’s global influence grew further when he took on the role of Global Head of Training and Quality for the Microsoft division at Rainmaker in 2012. In this position, he led the team responsible for implementing Microsoft’s “click to chat” and 30-day free trial response initiatives for products like Windows 8, Office 365, Windows Intune, and CRM online. His leadership ensured the successful execution of these programs, solidifying his reputation as a global business leader with a keen understanding of technology and customer service.

A Passion for Cricket: Balancing Professional and Personal Interests

Beyond his professional achievements, John has also pursued a lifelong passion for cricket. His love for the sport led him to become a qualified umpire with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in 2001. Over the course of his 14-year career as an umpire, John officiated in numerous high-profile matches, including the MCCA 4-day championship final and the National 20/20 televised final.

“Cricket, like business, is about strategy, precision, and teamwork,” John reflects on his dual passions. His involvement in cricket not only provided a balance to his professional life but also allowed him to stay connected to a sport that has been an integral part of his life.
