Early Education and Foundational Training

Dr. Fakhr-ud-Din Khattak began his academic journey with a deep passion for medicine and healthcare. He earned his MBBS from the renowned Khyber Medical College, Peshawar, in 1989, laying the foundation for his career in clinical excellence. His desire to expand his expertise led him to pursue a Post-Graduate Diploma in Health Planning and Management from the Institute of Management Studies, University of Peshawar, in 1997. This program equipped him with strategic insights into healthcare management, fueling his interest in policy development and system improvement.

In 2001, Dr. Khattak further advanced his education by completing a Master’s in Primary Health Care Management at the prestigious ASEAN Institute for Health Development, Mahidol University, Thailand. Early Career: Building a Foundation in Healthcare Leadership

Dr. Khattak’s first professional role came in December 1993, when he was appointed Deputy Medical Superintendent at Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar. In this early leadership role, he quickly made a mark by managing various administrative functions and improving hospital operations. His efforts to implement patient care policies led to measurable improvements in patient satisfaction and service delivery.

One of his first major leadership challenges came when he served as the Planning & Monitoring Officer for the Third Health Project & Health Care Development Project from 1994 to 1999. His role involved working on projects funded by the Asian Development Bank, focusing on enhancing healthcare infrastructure and services in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Through these projects, Dr. Khattak honed his skills in project management, resource allocation, and stakeholder engagement, building a reputation for operational excellence and strategic thinking.

Rising through the Ranks: A Focus on Public Health and Policy

In 2004, Dr. Khattak took on a pivotal role as the Deputy Director Development & Program Manager for the AIDS Control Program FATA. Here, he directed public awareness campaigns, prevention programs, and treatment initiatives, addressing one of the region’s most pressing health challenges. His ability to build partnerships with NGOs and local communities was instrumental in expanding outreach and support services for HIV/AIDS patients.

Following this, Dr. Khattak transitioned into the role of Assistant Director at the Director General Health Services, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. From 2012 to 2013, he played a key role in coordinating public health initiatives, particularly focused on maternal and child health, as part of the National MNCH Program. His leadership in this position demonstrated his commitment to improving healthcare accessibility and addressing gaps in service delivery. “I believe that healthcare should be both equitable and accessible, regardless of one’s geographic location or socioeconomic status,” he once noted during a public health seminar, underscoring his dedication to healthcare for all.

Leadership at the Provincial Health Services Academy

A major highlight of Dr. Khattak’s career was his tenure as the Director of Management (BS-19) at the Provincial Health Services Academy (PHSA), where he served from 2013 to 2018. Leading one of the most respected health training institutions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, he significantly enhanced training programs for healthcare professionals. Dr. Khattak introduced innovative learning methodologies, integrating technology to improve the quality of health education and training.

During his time at PHSA, Dr. Khattak built strategic relationships with both governmental and non-governmental stakeholders to expand training opportunities for healthcare workers. His efforts earned him recognition as a key figure in capacity building in the region’s healthcare sector. “My philosophy is simple: if we invest in our people, the system will improve organically. In these roles, he led hospital operations, focusing on improving patient care, streamlining hospital efficiency, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

Notably, in 2020, he was given additional charge as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Blood Transfusion Authority. Under his leadership, the organization implemented stringent quality controls and raised public awareness around blood safety and donation. His efforts resulted in increased voluntary blood donations and improved safety standards, positively impacting the healthcare landscape of the province.

As of 2024, Dr. Khattak continues to serve as Medical Superintendent at the Govt. Naseer Ullah Khan Babar Memorial Hospital, where he is responsible for leading strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing hospital performance.
