I teach several leadership academies. The entire role of a “leader” is changing. We are watching as clients are moving from the old, militaristic top-down, command and control model, to far more collaborative and creative leadership models. You should start by looking at the followers and begin to think through your job. It is at times to direct others. But more often a strong leader is someone who others want to follow. They are enablers, educators, facilitators, and builders in a collaborative style.

You know that advice you got from your university professors? Did you notice that they don’t work in the real world? (Uni jobs are great, but isolated.). FORGET IT.
You want to be a leader? Get in Toast Masters and learn to speak in front of groups. Get Stan Slaps books – all of them. Get every business book by John C. Maxwell. Get Sun Tzu Art of War.
Get Every Book you can on Persuasion, especially Robert Cialdini. Get DRIVE by Daniel Pink.
Forget what you THINK YOU KNOW. You don’t know anything.
Being a leader is hard. Put in the work, and you will be great. Fly by the seat, not gonna happen. Learning never stops, getting better never stops. This is a journey, not a destination.

You can be a leader without being in a ‘leadership role’ as well. It is all about your attitude and interactions with people around you. Lead by actions and examples, there is no need to chase tags just to make your resume look better. Trust and loyalty of your peers will go a long way!

Take it slow and learn the ropes of the business first. Learn what works for you, what are your strengths and weakness, before you want to lead others.

The best advice is keep reading and keep attending tech seminars being offered. Don’t focus only on one discipline or technology because at some point that technology will fall by the wayside and you don’t want that for your career. Scan the technical horizon for new technologies and new solution sets. Remember, tomorrow’s technical solution hasn’t been invented yet.
